Why is Republic Day on January 26?
It marks 26 January 1950, the day the Constitution of India came into force, replacing the colonial-era Government of India Act (1935) as the country's governing document. On that day India became a sovereign democratic republic, with its own elected head of state (the President) rather than the British monarch.
Why that specific date?
The date was chosen deliberately. On 26 January 1930, the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj — complete independence from British rule. When the Constitution was ready two decades later, leaders chose to bring it into effect on 26 January to honour that earlier pledge.
So Republic Day links two milestones: the 1930 demand for full independence and the 1950 birth of the republic.
