Originated in West Virginia (1908) and Spokane, Washington (1910) as a counterpart to Mother's Day. Made a US federal observance in 1972 by President Nixon.
Cards, gifts (ties, tools, watches, gadgets are stereotypically common). Family barbecues. Outdoor activities — fishing, sporting events.
