A year is a leap year if:
- It is divisible by 4 — usually a leap year…
- …unless it is divisible by 100 — then it is not a leap year…
- …unless it is also divisible by 400 — then it is a leap year after all.
Worked examples:
- 2024 ÷ 4 = yes → leap year ✓
- 2026 ÷ 4 = no → common year ✗
- 1900 ÷ 100 = yes, but ÷ 400 = no → NOT a leap year ✗
- 2000 ÷ 400 = yes → leap year ✓
That third rule is why 1900 was not a leap year but 2000 was — a detail that trips up a lot of date software.
Why do we need leap years at all?
Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun — not a neat 365. Without correction, the calendar would drift by roughly 24 days every 100 years, and within a few centuries summer would fall in December.
Adding one day every four years (and skipping a few century years) keeps the calendar locked to the seasons. The system was refined by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 — which is why we call it the Gregorian calendar.
