How many days in each month? The full list, the rhyme, and the knuckle trick

May 19, 2026·caldays editorial

How many days are in each month? Seven months have 31 days, four have 30 days, and February has 28 (or 29 in a leap year). Here is the complete list, plus two memory tricks so you never have to look it up again.

Need a specific month? Every month has its own page — e.g. January or February — with holidays and week numbers.

That's 7 months of 31 days, 4 months of 30 days, and February. In total a common year has 365 days and a leap year has 366.

The classic rhyme

The old English mnemonic still works perfectly:

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
Except February alone,
Which has twenty-eight days clear,
And twenty-nine in each leap year.

The knuckle trick

Make a fist and count across your knuckles and the dips between them:

  1. Each knuckle (raised) = a 31-day month.
  2. Each dip (between knuckles) = a 30-day month (or February).

Start at the first knuckle: January (31, knuckle), February (dip), March (31, knuckle), April (dip)… When you reach the last knuckle (July), start again at the first knuckle for August — which is why July and August both have 31 days back to back.

Why is February so short?

The Roman calendar originally began in March, leaving February as the last month — and the one that got "shortened" to keep the year aligned. When Julius Caesar and later reforms set month lengths, February kept its 28 days and became the home of the leap day. Every four years it gains a 29th day (29 February) to keep the calendar in step with Earth's orbit. See is 2026 a leap year? for the full rule.

Quick answers

Which months have 31 days? January, March, May, July, August, October and December — seven in total.

Which months have 30 days? April, June, September and November — four in total.

How many days does February have? 28 in a common year, and 29 in a leap year.

Why do July and August both have 31 days? August was lengthened to 31 days in the Roman era so it would not be "shorter" than July — leaving two 31-day months in a row.
