Three in one year is the most you can ever get — and it happens because of a calendar quirk explained below.
Why does Friday the 13th happen so often?
Every year has at least one Friday the 13th, and can have up to three. The February–March pairing in 2026 is a classic: in a common (non-leap) year, February and March begin on the same day of the week, because February has exactly 28 days (4 weeks). So if the 13th of February is a Friday, the 13th of March is too.
On average, the 13th of a month is slightly more likely to be a Friday than any other weekday — a strange result of the 400-year Gregorian calendar cycle first noted in the 1900s.
Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky?
The superstition combines two older fears:
- The number 13 has long been seen as unlucky in Western culture — partly because 12 is considered a "complete" number (12 months, 12 zodiac signs, 12 apostles), making 13 the awkward extra. The fear even has a name: triskaidekaphobia.
- Friday carried unlucky associations in Christian tradition (it's the day of the Crucifixion).
Combine the two and you get paraskevidekatriaphobia — the fear of Friday the 13th. The modern dread was popularised in the 20th century by novels, and later cemented by the famous horror film series.
Despite the reputation, studies have found no real increase in accidents on Friday the 13th — it's purely cultural.
Fun facts
- Many buildings skip a 13th floor, and some airlines skip row 13.
- The next year with three Friday the 13ths after 2026 is 2037.
- Tuesday the 13th is the "unlucky" version in Spanish-speaking countries and Greece, not Friday.
