Nova Scotia (6): no Family Day, no BC Day equivalent. Prince Edward Island (6 + Islander Day in Feb). Saskatchewan (9): includes Family Day, Saskatchewan Day (Mon 3 Aug). Yukon (10): includes Discovery Day (Mon 17 Aug). Northwest Territories (10): includes National Indigenous Peoples Day (21 Jun). Nunavut (10): includes Nunavut Day (1 Jul, same as Canada Day).

Federally regulated workers (banking, telecom, airlines, etc.)

The federal Canada Labour Code grants 11 paid statutory holidays to federally regulated workers — regardless of province. This adds:

  • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (30 September) — added 2021
  • Remembrance Day (11 November)
  • Boxing Day (28 December observed in 2026, since 26 Dec is Saturday)

Quebec's distinct calendar

Quebec is notable for several distinctions:

  • Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (24 June) — Quebec's national day, often more prominent than Canada Day in francophone areas
  • Easter Monday or Good Friday — Quebec employers choose ONE (most pick Good Friday)
  • National Patriots' Day — replaces Victoria Day in Quebec
  • No Remembrance Day (provincial level) — but federally regulated workers in Quebec still get it

Working on stat holidays — pay rules

Most Canadian provinces require statutory holiday pay if you work on the holiday — typically 1.5x your regular rate plus your normal day's pay. Specifics:

  • BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, NB, NS, PEI, NL — premium pay applies
  • Yukon, NWT, Nunavut — federal labour code applies (premium pay)

Eligibility usually requires:

  • You worked the day before AND the day after the holiday (some provinces)
  • Worked at the employer for 30+ days

Verify with your provincial labour board.

Banking and postal closures

Federal banks (RBC, TD, Scotia, BMO, CIBC, National Bank) close on all federal stat holidays. Canada Post does not deliver mail on stat holidays.

Stock market (TSX) closes on all federal holidays.
