What the panchang actually tells you

TITHI is the angular distance between the Moon and Sun in 12-degree increments. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the bright (Shukla) half from new moon to full, and 15 in the dark (Krishna) half from full back to new.

VARA is the weekday, named after the seven classical planets — Sun (Ravivara/Sunday), Moon (Somavara/Monday), Mars (Mangalavara), Mercury (Budhavara), Jupiter (Brihaspativara), Venus (Shukravara), Saturn (Shanivara).

NAKSHATRA is the Moon's lunar mansion — the section of the sky containing the Moon, divided into 27 segments named after stars like Ashwini, Rohini, and Punarvasu.

YOGA is the angular sum of Sun and Moon positions (also divided into 27 segments), and KARANA is half a tithi. Together these five define muhurta — the auspicious moments for ceremonies.

Frequently asked questions

What is today's tithi?
Approximate tithi for July 15: Shukla Chaturthi. For precise tithi, consult a regional panchang since the value depends on sunrise location.
What is the nalla neram today?
Nalla neram (Tamil for "good time") is computed from the panchang for each weekday. Use our Tamil calendar page for nalla neram timings.
Why does the panchang change by city?
The five elements are calculated from sun/moon positions at local sunrise — so Mumbai and Chennai can have slightly different tithis on the same date.
What's the difference between Vikram Samvat and Saka Samvat?
Both are Hindu year-numbering systems. Vikram Samvat (used in North India and Nepal) is currently in year 2082-2083. Saka Samvat (used by the Indian national calendar) is in year 1947-1948.
Is the panchang the same as the Hindu calendar?
The panchang is the daily detail view; the Hindu calendar is the year-long view. Both are computed from the same astronomical data.
