History & origin

On April 25, 1945, the Italian resistance (CLNAI) called for a general uprising in Northern Italian cities. By May 2, all of Northern Italy was liberated. The day was officially established as a national holiday in 1946.

Solemn ceremonies at war memorials. Speeches by political leaders. Partisans and partisan family associations lead parades — "Bella Ciao" sung. School commemorations.
