The International Day of Peace, September 21, is observed worldwide as a day to commit to peace above all differences. Established by the UN General Assembly in 1981.

History & origin

Established by UN resolution 36/67 (1981). Originally observed on the third Tuesday of September, it was fixed to September 21 by UN resolution 55/282 in 2001. The UN rings the Peace Bell at its headquarters at noon.

Moments of silence at noon. Educational events about conflict resolution. Cease-fires honored in some conflict zones during the day. UN events and speeches.
