What is a sukkah?
The central mitzvah of the festival: building and dwelling in a sukkah — a temporary hut with a roof of cut plant material (s'chach, often palm fronds or bamboo) through which the stars should be visible. It recalls the temporary shelters the Israelites lived in during the 40 years in the wilderness. For seven days, meals (and for many, sleep) move into the sukkah.
The four species (arba minim)
Each day of Sukkot (except Shabbat), four plants are held and waved together:
- Lulav — a closed palm frond
- Etrog — a citron fruit
- Hadass — myrtle branches
- Aravah — willow branches
Together they are waved in six directions, symbolizing that God is everywhere.
