When is Halloween 2026?
Halloween is always 31 October, every year. In 2026 that's a Saturday — convenient for evening events without a work or school day to follow.
It is immediately followed by two related observances:
- 1 November — All Saints' Day (a public holiday in many Catholic countries)
- 2 November — All Souls' Day / Day of the Dead (especially important in Mexico)
Together these three days are sometimes called Allhallowtide.
Why is Halloween on October 31?
Halloween's roots go back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "sow-in"), which marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of 31 October the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin, and spirits could cross over — so people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward them off.
When Christianity spread, the church placed All Saints' Day on 1 November. The evening before became "All Hallows' Eve" — eventually shortened to Halloween.
How Halloween is celebrated around the world
- United States & Canada: trick-or-treating, costumes, carved pumpkins (jack-o'-lanterns), and haunted houses. The biggest Halloween market in the world.
- Ireland & Scotland: the original home of the tradition — bonfires, games like apple-bobbing, and "guising" (the ancestor of trick-or-treating).
- Mexico & Latin America: flows into Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead, 1–2 November) — a vibrant celebration honouring deceased relatives with altars, marigolds and sugar skulls.
- Japan: huge costume street parties, especially in Tokyo's Shibuya district, though without trick-or-treating.
- Philippines: families visit cemeteries for Undás, cleaning and decorating graves of relatives.
The jack-o'-lantern tradition
Carving pumpkins comes from an Irish legend about "Stingy Jack," who was doomed to wander with only a hollowed-out turnip and a burning coal to light his way. Irish immigrants brought the custom to America, where the larger, easier-to-carve pumpkin became the icon we know today.
