United States Father's Day — Sunday, 21 June 2026

The most widely-recognized international date. The third Sunday of June since 1972, when President Nixon signed it into permanent federal observance.

Origins

  • 1908 — First Father's Day service held in Fairmont, West Virginia (commemorating a mine disaster that killed 361 fathers)
  • 1910 — Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, organized the first Father's Day at the YMCA — to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised 6 children as a single dad
  • 1924 — President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea but didn't make it national
  • 1966 — President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday of June
  • 1972 — Nixon signed federal law making it permanent

What's traditional

  • Cards and gifts — Father's Day is the 4th biggest card-sending holiday in the US
  • Ties, tools, gadgets, sports gear — stereotyped but still common
  • BBQ / grilling — June timing makes this a popular activity
  • Visiting father, calling phone — phone traffic spikes second only to Mother's Day
  • Fishing, hiking, sports activities together

Spending stats

  • Average US spending: ~$170 per person (less than Mother's Day's ~$220)
  • Total US: ~$23 billion annually

Italy / Spain / Portugal — Thursday, 19 March 2026

Catholic countries celebrate Father's Day on Saint Joseph's Day (San Giuseppe / San José) — the feast day of Joseph, husband of Mary and earthly father of Jesus.

Tradition

The day is observed by Catholic families with:

  • Special meals featuring fried sweet pastries (Italian zeppole di San Giuseppe, Spanish San José fritters)
  • Gifts to fathers and grandfathers
  • Mass attendance at parishes named for St. Joseph

In Valencia, Spain, the day is part of the larger Las Fallas festival (March 15-19) — culminating in burning enormous papier-mâché sculptures.

UK Father's Day — Sunday, 21 June 2026

Despite the UK having a different Mother's Day, Father's Day in the UK matches the international date — 3rd Sunday of June. Adopted from the US in the 20th century.

Australia / New Zealand — Sunday, 6 September 2026

The Antipodes celebrate Father's Day on the first Sunday of September — early spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Why different from the US?

  • June in Australia/NZ is winter — not conducive to outdoor BBQ traditions
  • September matches the start of spring and Father's Day rituals like camping, fishing
  • Australia adopted September in 1936 from a New Zealand initiative

Thailand — Saturday, 5 December 2026

Thailand celebrates Father's Day on the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) — even after his death in 2016, the date has been preserved as a public holiday combining national and family meaning.

The country wears yellow (the king's color) on the day. People give canna flowers (the official Father's Day flower in Thailand) to their fathers.

This is one of the few Father's Days that is also a national public holiday.

Taiwan — Saturday, 8 August 2026

Taiwan's Father's Day falls on August 8th — because in Mandarin Chinese, "eight-eight" (bā-bā, 八八) sounds like "papa" (爸爸, bàba).

This date was chosen during WWII as a tribute to fathers who had fallen in the war. Today families have meals together and children give gifts.

Father's Day in Asia

  • Japan — 21 June (like the US)
  • South Korea — 8 May (Parents' Day — single day for both mothers and fathers)
  • China — 21 June (recently adopted Western practice)
  • India — 21 June
  • Indonesia — 12 November (Hari Ayah, commemorating Indonesian armed forces)
  • Vietnam — 21 June (limited observance)
  • Philippines — 21 June

Father's Day Greetings

  • English: Happy Father's Day, Happy Fathers Day
  • Spanish: Feliz Día del Padre
  • French: Bonne Fête des Pères
  • German: Frohen Vatertag (note: German Vatertag is Ascension Thursday — 14 May 2026 — not international Father's Day)
  • Italian: Buona Festa del Papà
  • Portuguese: Feliz Dia dos Pais
  • Japanese: お父さん、ありがとう (Otosan, arigatou)
  • Chinese: 父亲节快乐 (Fùqīnjié kuàilè)
  • Korean: 좋은 아버지의 날 (Joheun abeoji-ui nal)
  • Hindi: पितृ दिवस की शुभकामनाएं (Pitru Divas ki shubhkamnayein)

Is Father's Day a public holiday?

Generally no — except in:

  • Thailand (5 December — King's Birthday — public holiday)
  • South Korea (8 May — Parents' Day — half-day or full holiday)

In other countries, Father's Day is a cultural observance only.
