Diwali explained: what is the Festival of Lights, and why is it celebrated?

May 10, 2026·caldays editorial

Diwali — the Festival of Lights — is the biggest and brightest festival in the Hindu calendar, celebrated by over a billion people across India and the world. In 2026, the main day of Diwali falls on 8 November. But what is Diwali, and why all the lights? Here's the meaning behind it.

For dates and where it's a public holiday, see our Diwali 2026 dates by country guide, or the Diwali holiday page.

What is Diwali?

Diwali (also spelled Deepavali, meaning "row of lights") celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Homes, temples and streets are decorated with countless oil lamps (diyas), candles and lights — the visual signature of the festival.

It is primarily a Hindu festival but is also observed by Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists, each with their own meaning. Because it follows the Hindu lunar calendar, the date moves each year, usually falling between mid-October and mid-November.

Why is Diwali celebrated?

There isn't one single story — different regions celebrate different events:

  • North India: the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, his path lit by rows of lamps (from the Ramayana).
  • South India: the victory of Krishna over the demon Narakasura.
  • For many: the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, who is welcomed into clean, brightly lit homes.
  • Sikhs: mark Bandi Chhor Divas, the release of Guru Hargobind from prison.
  • Jains: commemorate the spiritual liberation (moksha) of Lord Mahavira.

The common thread is light triumphing over darkness.

The five days of Diwali

Diwali is not just one day — it's a five-day festival:

DayNameMeaning
1DhanterasBuying gold/utensils for good fortune
2Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)Cleansing and preparation
3Diwali / Lakshmi PujaThe main day — lights, prayers, feasting
4Govardhan Puja / AnnakutThanksgiving, food offerings
5Bhai DoojCelebrating the bond between brothers and sisters

In 2026, the main Lakshmi Puja day is 8 November.

How is Diwali celebrated?

  • Lights everywhere — diyas, candles, and electric lights on homes and streets.
  • Rangoli — colourful patterns made on floors with powders, rice or flowers.
  • Fireworks and firecrackers (though many cities now limit these for air quality).
  • Sweets and feasts — gifts of mithai (Indian sweets) exchanged with family and friends.
  • New clothes, cleaning the home, and prayers for prosperity.
