German Unity Day, October 3, is Germany's national day — commemorating the 1990 reunification of East Germany (German Democratic Republic) with West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany).
After the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, formal reunification took effect on October 3, 1990 — when the GDR was absorbed into the Federal Republic. October 3 was chosen as the holiday over November 9 (which carries other historical associations, including the 1938 Kristallnacht).
The main celebration rotates between German cities each year. "Tag der offenen Tür" — open-door day at government buildings. Free public events, concerts, and exhibits. The Bundestag (Parliament) holds special sessions.
National public holiday. Public transport runs reduced schedules. Major celebrations in the hosting city (announced each year).
